The Catacombs

Back in the crystal city, Elias and Thorin grew restless. Elias had been approached daily by either Sisren or Komu about his magical training but had thus far refused. He was still angry, and the last thing he wanted to do was train under the perennially bad-tempered Sisren. Thorin was offered the chance to leave but chose to stay with Elias to protect him from “all the vultures.”

Elias spent most of his time touring the city and exploring the catacombs under the cathedral. It gave him time to think. Today he toured the tunnels, using a crystal to light the way. The crystal had been given to him by his grandmother years ago. Elias recalled his grandmother’s gentle training. I wish I could talk to her one last time, he thought. I’m out of my comfort zone, and I desperately need some advice. Grandmother, I wish you were here.

He sighed and sat down, twirling the light crystal between his fingers. It was so quiet. The air was damp and very cold. The floors were slippery with icy water. Then he heard footsteps.

“Who’s there?” he said, raising the crystal above his head. There was no answer, so he produced a stronger light, “Liuhath!” Blue light erupted from both his hands. In the distance, he could see the outline of a male figure. “Who are you? Identify yourself, please.”

“Relax, Elias…that’s your name, right?” The male voice sounded familiar.

“Show yourself, or else,” said Elias, his voice rising.

The man laughed. “Or else what? Do you believe yourself a match for me, boy?”

The man stepped forward, and his features came into view. Elias recognized him—it was one of the dragon riders. He had been present at Mitca’s funeral with his dragon. At his throat, a carved dragon stone lay embedded. It gleamed strangely in the firelight; the color fluctuated.

“I recognize you. You were at the funeral with your dragon. You’re Hanko, the rider.” Elias was starting to sweat. The man stepped closer to him, and he was not smiling. Hanko had deep shadows under both eyes.

“Yes. I’m a rider. I’ve been watching you for a long time.”

“What do you want?” Elias stepped back, frightened. He felt the dragon stone around his neck getting hot. He clutched the pouch holding the stone.

“I’ve been sent here… for one purpose.”

Elias’ heart pounded. Hanko inched towards him, his eyes filled with malice. Now the dragon stone was vibrating inside the pouch around his neck. Elias felt power draining from his body into the stone.

“I’m sorry to have to do this. I truly am,” said Hanko, who was now only paces away from him.

“Do what?” asked Elias, but he already knew the answer. Hanko looked murderous. This man was planning to kill him, and Elias knew it. Hanko reached out with a glowing hand, and Elias felt a spike of energy from the dragon stone. Elias screamed. A bolt of lightning erupted from his dragon stone, hitting Hanko full force in the face.
